I told him this was a chance to go to school and get a degree and join me practicing law. He refused because in high school his counselor said college wasn't for him. He eventually gave in to my nagging and enrolled in community college. He did well enough to get into Loyola Chicago and graduated well enough go to Iowa Law. Cost of law school was the biggest challenge. He won a full tuition scholarship which made attending Iowa Law possible. Court Judge Cartoon
The judge always used to instruct a jury on inferences and how to make them. The example he uses is, Mom has cooked a gorgeous chocolate cake for the bowling league because she's in charge for refreshments. She goes to her jury duty; and when she gets home, she sees the cake -- with a piece missing. She calls those two urchins down into the kitchen. And Johnny says, "I saw Suzzie take the piece of cake." Suzzie, hard on the heels of Johnny, says, "Wait a minute. I heard that. I saw Johnny take the piece of cake." What are you to do? Well, a parent knows what to do. You stare at them both. That's what you do. And over here in the corner of Johnny's mouth, there's some frosting. And down that t-shirt of his, you see some cake crumbs. Then you stare at Suzzie: no frosting, no cake crumbs. By logical, reasonable inference, you can infer who took the piece of cake!
